A Quick Data Capture Glossary

Bar Code

A system of rendering information in a linear sequence of machine readable elements. These elements are contstructed from a series of rectangular black bars with white spaces between the bars. Pre-arranged groupings of these elements form characters as defined for specific bar code types. In document imaging, bar codes are normally used to encode index data and/or to separate documents. Bar code types include Code 39, Interleaved 2 of 5, UPC etc.

Bar length

In a bar code, the number of characters encoded.

Bar width

The thickness of a bar in a bar code.

Cache

Memory used for the temporary storage of images during scanning. Caching images to the accelerator board can improve performance. This is often referred to as a prescan cache.

Data Capture

Data Capture is also known as electronic data capture and/or draft capture (EDC). Data Capture is a data processing term for collecting, formatting, and storing data in computer memory according to defined fields.

Document Management

Document Management is a process of managing documents. This can involve a integrated system which involves the creation, reviewing, communication, distribution, analysis, sharing, storage, electronic tracking and retrieval, administration and occassionally the destruction of digitized images of paper documention and other types of information.

EDC (Electronic Draft Capture)

Process of electronically authorizing and capturing data typically in a credit card transaction using the information necessary which is encoded in the magnetic strip of a bank card.

Electronic Document Management : The same as document management, but with the addition of electronic versions of documents.

Electronic Document Management

The same as document management, but with the addition of electronic versions of documents.

ICR

Intelligent Character Recognition. The ability of software to recognize and translate handwritten characters into machine-readable text.

OCR

Optical Character Recognition. OCR is the capability of software to translate and recognise machine printed alphanumeric characters into machine and readable text.

RF Tagging (Radio Frequency Tags)

Also called RFID (Radio Frequency Identification), or dedicated short range communication (DSRC), this system is similar to bar code technology. Its system is made up of an antenna and transceiver, which reads the data from the frequency and transfers it to processing equipment; and a tag (or transponder), containing the radio frequency and data to be transmitted.
